Blue Monday is observed on the third Monday in January and is often referred to as the “saddest day of the year.”

Originally created as a media concept, Blue Monday has since evolved into an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health and emotional wellbeing. Today, charities, workplaces, schools, and communities use it to encourage self-care, reduce stigma, and promote open conversations about mental health.

55% of the people in our housing are affected by mental health issues.

Ways to support your wellbeing — not just on Blue Monday, but every day:

• Connect with someone: Reach out to a friend, family member, or mental health professional. Talking openly can ease emotional pressure.

• Move your body: Gentle activity, even a short walk, can boost mood by increasing serotonin and endorphins.
• Limit negative input: Be mindful of news and social media consumption. Taking breaks can reduce stress and overwhelm.
• Create structure: Set one small, achievable goal for the day. Completing it can help restore a sense of control.
• Be kind to yourself: Low motivation is okay. Rest when needed, nourish your body, and remember that difficult moments do pass.
Mental wellbeing matters all year round.

We were delighted to hear from a paramedic with the Derby City Council REST team, who shared how pleased she was with the transformation in a resident following a recent appointment.

They told us:

“I cannot believe how well she is doing — she looks fantastic, but that’s Derventio.”

This transformation reflects not only the resident’s own determination and positive changes, but also the dedication, commitment, and highly personalised support we provide through our Home4Me project.

It’s always uplifting to receive such positive feedback, especially when it highlights the real difference being made in residents’ lives. 😊
